An Evil Presence

I've been thinking about this topic for quite some time now simply because I have found it very hard to put into explainable words my experience of what I call an evil spirit or presence.

We can all let our imagination run wild with fairy tales, fables, or horror films but I'm talking about having a very real strong overwhelming feeling that something, someone or wherever you are, you can sense an evil spirt or presence around you. I'm not the kind of person to easily jump to spiritual conclusions if I hear a noise in the middle of the night, can't find my keys or keep losing things around the house AND neither am I the type to casually blame every wicked deed on an evil spirit, but if anyone has ever had an experience with anything of an evil nature then you'll know what I'm talking about. And I'm sure I'm not going crazy, or am I?

To cut a long story short, I have seen a woman whom I knew for some time completely change character within seconds and speak in what I could only call a demonic voice. The tone, the snarl, the sound, her eyes totally glazed over as if nobody was home and something just took control of her for what seemed to be minutes. I will never ever forget it and there were independent witnesses present who saw and heard the exact same thing.

On another occasion, there was a building that I used to go to every week. Whenever I came within at least 30 yards of the door, I felt as if a darkness fell over me, the blood was draining from my body, I felt scared with an over powering sense not to go in there. I just knew that that building was surrounded by something very real and very evil. I just can't explain it enough. It is one thing to believe that evil spirits exist and it's another thing to have experienced it.

Lastly, another experience I've had when sleeping is an evil presence sitting on my chest like a heavy weight, pulling me. I feel paralysed but can't wake up to get it off me. It's a horrible evil feeling.

Do you believe in evil spirits or even demonic possession?
Is there any connection between mental illness and demonic possession?
Have you ever experienced what I call an evil spirit or presence? Can you share them with us.

I'd love to hear your views, opinions and comments.

  1. Thought provoking indeed. I'm not very religious. One of the reasons is that I have a very open mind and I think there are all sorts of possibilities - including extra terrestrial life / ghosts / demons ... U name it. And I thik we all experience and interpret these things differently.

  2. There is absolutely more than we could see or feel with our regular senses between heaven and earth... I don't know how to describe it either, but I DO believe, most certainly, that there are bad things out there!!...

  3. I'd be asking, "WHY" would evil come to this place? Or similarly, if it's not an exterior force, why does my mind associate evil with this place?

    1. Good questions Therese. And I don't have the perfect answers. I can only guess that it was a place of great manipulation, control, abuse on the outside, and it was often done in a subtle way. Grown men with bubbly characters would be turned into quivering idiots with no independent mind of their own. I knew something was wrong as I sensed an overwhelming feeling of evil which was my warning sign with hindsight. But now with experience under my belt, I am aware it was evil.

  5. First the spooky feeling in the same place every time, could be powerful Electro-magnetic fields caused by poorly shielded wiring. The first, a mental disorder. And the last: http://www.soundsleeping.org/articles/sleep-paralysis.htm

Yeah, I am a huge skeptic. I have never found a reason to believe.

    1. Thanks Jamie. I know the first in this case was not a mental disorder because I knew this woman at the time and for some time after that event. I wish I could explain it more but I can't. With the experience I've had now I can truly say it was what I would call an evil spirit speaking through her. Not sure how else to put it.

I've heard about this sleep paralysis and that many people have the same or similar thing so I'm gonna read the link you left to find out more. So thanks for the comment and info.

  6. Once in a long while have a deep feeling of dread. In my mind I see an image that is very familiar to me. It is almost unbearable but in a moment it's gone! Afterwards I can never remember what I saw. I do know that it was an overcast day and I was coming around a turn in the road. Maybe I was floating. I'm not sure.
I wrote an unpublished novel about a man who is tricked into making an agreement with an evil entity. The problem with writing this novel was that I had no idea of what I was going to write. It was more like I was reading a novel than writing one. At times I had to stop because I was afraid. It's called A Clandestine Covenant. I wish I had enough talent to do justice to the story.
There is evil in the world.
Something must be the source of this evil.

    1. Very interesting comment John. What makes you think it was only in your mind and not something that actually appeared to you? Also, how do you know the thing is very familiar if afterwards you can't remember what it is. I'm just curious to know.

  8. I used to stay back in the deserted hostel during holidays back in my student days. It was a huge, sprawling building with bleak, hollow spaces that would get eerie by the dark. There were times when I heard pattering of feet and hissing sounds of various intensities in the wings, I was sure it was no hypnogogic dream. Many times, I saw someone hurried vanishing by the turn to the mess.

I have also been a resident of a multi-storeyed building believed to be haunted by a recently departed woman. There were nights I could hear someone sobbing in the stairwell.

Yet, those could all be a projections of the fears and trepidation of my poor heart fed on ghost stories!

    1. Umashankar, you do have a point in regards to 'projections of fears' because when I was young I remember seeing a Dracula film which scarred me for many years. As I got older I realised that although certain horror films may have truth to them, not every noise in the dark is an immortal ghoul coming to drink my blood. But all the same, I never watch anything horror, one Dracula was enough for me. Thanks for sharing your experiences here Umashankar.

  11. Congrats on taking the bull by the horns with such a difficult topic. And no, I don't think you're crazy. As Shakespeare wrote in Hamlet "there are more things in heaven and earth than are dreamed of in your philosophy", or words to that effect.

There are a few things that I've come across in my life which, although as real as the keyboard I'm typing this on, have no explanation in science.

Although I acknowledge factors such as schizophrenia and multiple personalities as coming under the bracket of mental illness, I also believe that there is another element where people can come under the influence of personal spiritual entities to the extent that their own personality is temporarily overwhelmed and they become, to all intents and purposes, possessed. And these are people who show no other signs at any other time of any kind of disorder or illness, and return back to their normal state, exactly as they were before, although, obviously confused.

I have also sensed changes of mood or atmosphere brought on by these presences which have made me feel an uneasy sense of being sick to my stomach. It's been a while since anything like this has happened and it's far from everyday, but, once you've come into contact with something like this it's hard to forget or deny, though at the same time impossible to fully explain.

  12. Hello
I knew someone who would tell me his dreams. He dreamt of violence towards his pet. It was disturbing. He is mentally ill, and while I didn't see him act violently toward his pet, I did see a lot of aggression, and I wondered when he might snap. Really glad I got away in hindsight.

Your experiences are interesting, albeit freaky and/or spooky, to say the least. I have never had such an experience, not even close, in my 57 years, so it is tough for me to convey anything toward meaningful in regards to your situation/questions.

I do know this: In reading some of the comments on your "Resilience" Blog Post (another great post BTW), I could not help but focus on the words of one of your readers, Melody Lowes, who speaks of an "Unshakeable Faith in an unshakeable God." Those are such Powerful words and I truly believe in them, as she stated. I also believe that if you have Faith, all else pales...

I have recently learned a scripture, courtesy of someone I respect, that says: "Therefore, since we have been justified by Faith, we have peace with God, through our Lord Jesus Christ." Romans 5: 1...

Really tough to answer. All the comments are so very interesting. Wishing you the absolute best, my friend... Slu

I myself, have experienced many things from childhood onwards and I would have been inclined to question them all, if it wasn't for the fact that my siblings (when we were much younger) had experience exactly the same sort of things. I have often wondered though, if those with mental health issues, are just delusional,or if they are indeed experiencing something that others don't.

As always, a very interesting subject Rumpunch. :)

    1. I think I would answer in almost the same way as Navigator did in regards to there being a difference between someone having a mental health illness and someone having an evil spirit.

The point you make about people with mental health issues is interesting and complicated. After all, who says that even if a person does have what we call a mental illness that what they are seeing is not also real. In the same way as someone experiencing paranoia does not rule out the possibility that someone is really out to get them. I appreciate your comments Lily.

    2. This whole thing is deep. RPD, if you don't mind me just flying off on a tangent with regards to the mental illness/awareness issue....

I was reading something else the other day about hallucinogenic drugs. The theory was that our minds have to process such a huge amount of data from the various senses that they are forced to prioritise those things that relate to survival. Hence, a lot more of the things related to meaning in and of itself get sidelined and ignored. Our minds just don't have the capacity to process them. So when a person takes, for example, mescaline, which impedes the mind's processing capacity, it renders it more receptive to the 'bigger picture' outside the box of what is most immediately pertinent to survival. And this renders a person more aware of what we would label the transcendental, but which is, in reality, simply the eternal and universal rendered imminent in the particular. Which, as you can imagine, could make a potentially overwhelming revelation out of any mundane human experience.

The writer then said that schizophrenics lack that filter and, hence, are bombarded with such revelatory perceptions constantly and suffer from their inability to process them. Their illness is therefore a surfeit of reality as it is, beyond our capacity to 'tame' it.

I actually believe you have a brilliant point Angie. There is a difference, and if people don't believe in evil spirits then they are naturally more inclined to diagnose people with some form of mental illness. And that's sad if you think about all the unnecessary medication etc..

YES, you really did say it, ha ha ha. Thanks Angie :)

  22. I cannot speak of any personal psychic experience, with the clear exception of my little Elf.

Also clearly, that only prove that I never had a personal psychic experience, with the exception of Elf.

Some year ago, to complete the credits needed for my BA in Lit, I took a course of Comparative Religion where I discovered that psychic experience is common rule in all religious notions, but that is not an exclusive field.

About your sleeping experience, I remember that in medieval English, and before, we had the old 'mare' who has nothing to relate it with the Equus caballus or horses, but is a goblin or incubus who (from Old English 'mera' or 'maron' that together with 'night' give us nightmare) is an evil female spirit afflicting sleepers with a feeling of oppression. Maybe this explain a bit of it.

There is a vast Universe surrounding us that we do not 'see', and there is a small part of it, we 'sense' very poorly through our five senses, which are small windows letting us to 'think' we can prove or disprove laws, and experiences as real.

This last situation is what makes me to be very cautious when we talk about psychic experiences. I cannot say what is true or what isn't, which makes this mail a bit unnecessary.

    1. Oh Od Liam, you've just got me thinking deeply about something after I read your comment. You mentioned about the psychic experience being more common in religions but not exclusive, so to speak. It would be very interesting to know the ratios between those who believe in evil spirits etc who have some form of religion and those who don't follow any religion but still believe in evil spirits!

So true. This world is so large that everyday people are finding out fascinating new things. New species, stars, voids and the list is endless. Will 'man' ever get to the bottom of it, Hell No.

So, you comment was not unnecessary at all and it's always a pleasure to hear from you :)

    2. Unfortunately, I do not have rates, only experiences about people. It is a bit raw, in the sense that it can be argue against, but I believe in it implicitly.

Faith, which in the last state is a delicate movement of the soul, or if you do not believe in the existence of the soul, I am talking about that impalpable thing that distinguish our I; the one "in" us that makes our sentience different from the other human beings.

It is a delicate movement that speaks of a special relationship between the believer and the external Universe. If you have not that delicacy, which is not a prebend nor makes a human being any better than those who do not enjoy it, it is almost impossible, I daresay, to have faith and to "believe", which is a dubious verb, since those who have the experience of it, really "know", but cannot express that knowledge without proofs that are not necessary for the faithful people.

This delicate movement I refer to, is the one that accompany the psychic experiences, so it is logical that faithful people were prone to those experiences, and those who do not "believe" tend to disbelieve also in evil spirits and explain those manifestations as "psychic maladies" without even knowing what they are speaking about, which is also the case of the believers, who have had the experience but cannot explain its source or origin.

This lack of knowledge, demonstrable knowledge, is what makes me so cautious when talking about this subject.

Sorry about the length, but it is impossible to make this terser!

Thank you for your patience and kindness!

    1. Although I've had problems sleeping for many years, this experience does not happen often as it's rare and out of the blue. I don't watch or listen to anything like horrors or scary stuff and that stems from my childhood after the Dracula incident.

As for talking to a professional you make an excellent point, but this is where things can seriously go wrong.
What if the professional doesn't believe in evil spirits? They may label me as a real crazy nut and diagnose me as having a mental illness - rather than someone who had an experience which is beyond the borders of the therapist's belief system.
I mean, how do I explain that I heard someone talk in what I would call a demonic voice? Or an evil spirit may have been sitting on my chest? I sense the restraining jacket would be on the list, with a court order to take me away.

Saying all that, you get someone who would be open enough to listen and provide you with some reasurance. Thank you for the comment Empty Nest Insider.

    2. RPD, In case when you experience that problem in sleep, by any chance have you been tired (physically) or have some sort of tension/stress (mentally)?

As I said earlier, that's what I've found happened to me. Too much tiredness/stress produced that feelings of giant sitting on my chest or body- my solution was that either playing some music while sleeping or, skip using anything that could cover or come over my body, and last but not least is to try not to stress myself (usually skipping the habit of not sleeping like 2 or more days). :))

      Hope it may helps.

  24. Demons are real spiritual beings, fallen angels which followed after Lucifer when he rebelled against GOD. The evil/trepidation you perceive in certain areas comes from forces of spiritual darkness. Demons are more powerful than human beings but GOD is most powerful above all. Jesus Christ and his followers regularly cast out demons. The solution to demonic possession and disturbances is all about faith in GOD. Read a Bible, pray and fast. 26. One of my cousin had a shock a long ago, he saw something, he can't explained later- he became unconscious after shouting to see it. For around a year he wasn't comfortable to be alone.

Actually I grew up with so many physic story, and met few of victims, too. A lot of time I feel something isn't right out of no reason, later had to face bad situation or come to know about bad news- but all those are life as it goes so nothing special.

So far I think that Evil presence could be real, but they tend to stay away from strong minded person!

Regarding your sleeping experience, I had similar experience- those happens specially when I'm too tired and my nerve awake (due to excitement or tiredness) even when I'm asleep. 2. My cousin said he saw something which was kind of fire, that's all he could describe- "It" has shows anger to him then he became unconscious. He wasn't comfortable to talk about that either- so we didn't push him much. Eventually its cured and he's been doing fine, no such issues repeated. Just so you know, they were in a house which covered with many trees and it was outside of main town.

My grandmother had "illness", she used to talk with some spirit! I was too little so I never got the chance to ask her. Before I born my mother had similar "illness". But after I born she never had illness anymore. One thing is that they both suffered family issues at times. The problem never really came back to any of us-

Few of relatives and other people I saw/know had either family issues, or they have/had physical sickness. Interestingly I've experienced to see people to change character like you said, and that was when they were in treatment by some physic curator.

Since many years, from the stories I heard and I've experienced- like I told you, I've seen that strong minded people doesn't effected by Evil existence (even if they tried!).

I wont say they does or doesn't exists, I would say- may be. :))

  27. Thought-provoking post, as always, Rum Punch! To believe in a personal God who embodies good is to believe in a personal evil being, as well... I have only had a handful of experiences with a sense or presence of evil - and have found that inviting the presence of God into the situation breaks up the evil - does that make sense? A good friend of mine had very similar sleeping experiences - I believe you. On another note - to say that all mental illness is demonically produced is foolish - could it be just as foolish to deny the possibility of evil influence on human subjects...? Science can't explain all of the intricacies of human experience - why do some cancer patients 'miraculously' recover from terminal illness? What makes some people rise above unbelievably difficult circumstances? How do we fall in love? The tangible and the objective fall short when pondering the mysteries of the workings of the human heart. And it is within the human heart that we find incredible capacity for both good and evil. I would say that the place which gives you such 'willies' is best avoided for now. ( We want to keep you safe and writing for years to come...) :)

I do not think you're crazy, I have had experiences such as these as well (maybe not the demonic voice experience however). i will never forget the feeling of doom I would experience when entering the attic of my childhood home. It was downright spooky. Yet the rest of the house was peaceful. My father is a priest in the Episcopal church and he has shared experience of his own encountering the presence of evil. I believe in God and I also believe in evil. Excellent post, I loved it!

  29. Interesting post indeed RPD for the difficulty in sleeping (heavy weight on your chest, perhaps feel the weight of a person sitting on your bed heavy breath in your face) there is a scientific explanation for that!. It is known as "the kneeling hag" it is found in all cultures and it have been studied.

For the rest well I was always been sceptic (a non believer) but some experiences I have come across might have changed my view. I come from a place listed as a "WINDOW AREA" basically it means that these kind of phenomenon's happen at a higher rate then in other places. Many habits and stories are deeply rotted in my country's culture.

One particular story I have come across recently was that for days I been dreaming of a girl in my apartment, must add that the entire building was kind of filled with electricity and vibrations, occasionally I heard a little girls laugh and giggles. I thought I was going mad..then a few days later a woman form the UK came knocking on my door, she said she used to live in my apartment about 45 years ago and so deeply wished to coma back and show her children where she have been brought up. Only saw the girl once more a few days ago, pointing to a door....a few days later I have found an old penny blocked in the doors lock...quite odd (its the second one I found). weird the family that lived there before for 28 years never found any thing in there...

It seems that there are some really strange things happening in this world, I just wonder why that penny has blocked the door lock for the second time? And why that woman came back after so many years. It could all be innocent but there again...

  30. Absolutely I believe in such things. The hair always rises up on my neck when I feel something is not quite right. But I am terrified of such things and surround myself in white light to keep that stuff away. I will tell you this--I feel incredibly fortunate because I have some really good spirits here--I live in an older home and it is not uncommon to see a woman walking through my backyard garden at night--some of our guests have seen her. There is also a young, male adult who walks around inside my house. I have seen him several times. He means no harm, but nor does he wish to communicate. I am used to this stuff though because it has been happening to me since I was very young. Like I said though, I wrap myself in that white light every day to ward off the creepy things. You need to try that each night before you go to bed, RPD. Hypnosis helped me as well.

    2. A little difficult to explain, but it's when you close your eyes and focus on the spot at the center of your forehead--the third eye. Envision a small stream of light emitted from that area, then imagine it slowly wrapping around your body all the way down to your toes like a cocoon. I say certain prayers at the time as well to ward off negativity. A little fun fact about Meno Mama-- I learned hypnosis when I was a young adult and used it on myself daily as well as on others who were looking for something specific that needed to be understood. I was good at it but that was so long ago---I should dust off those skills and get back into it because it really was a peaceful experience for me.

  31. My friend,

This is a difficult one. It might be suggested that "evil forces" are the sum total of being overwhelmed by a negative environment which can heighten the senses and cause the mind to play tricks. However, that's debatable and I think there is credibility in the possibility of evil forces being at work. I also think that if it be the case, I can also not give said evil the attention it craves.

Having said that. I shall tell you a true story with tangible, physical evidence. A number of years ago, I was sitting in the living room with the rest of my family in our house in Vancouver, Canada. Suddenly, my mother let out a scream. On her leg was a large red mark in the shape of some kind of weird looking hand. We all saw it and it really stunned us.

As for you, my friend, it might be that you are experiencing a form of sleep paralysis. I do send you peaceful, positive wishes. I've witnessed the positive energy that has been forthcoming on my site. I share it with you.

    In kindness and goodwill,

    2. To this day, I have no idea what that mark on my mother's leg was. It became a red welt and looked like what you might call the backside of a deformed claw-like hand. To my knowledge, it never happened again. I've never asked my mother about it since. I think she doesn't want to be reminded of it. A most eerie situation, indeed.

For what it's worth, I'm sending you some additional positive energy. Ya never know! :)

  34. rpd, I guess my simple answer is that I don't believe in demons or evil spirits of any kind. I think they're just a product of the human imagination. As for the woman you mentioned, her strange behavior on that occasion could be explained in many ways, none of which requires a supernatural explanation or a diagnosis of mental illness.

    ReplyDelete

    1. But what other options would I have NP for explaining her ways apart from what I felt? I'm open to options, help!

    2. rpd, I wasn't there to witness her behavior, so I don't know what the exact circumstances were. But I've seen similar irrational out-of-character outbursts occur several times when I was involved with psychotherapy. My guess is that her conduct on that occasion had some sort of emotional or physiological basis. I think it's sad that people are dragging in all these theories about demons and evil presences. I think they're very dangerous.

  36. Rum-Punch Drunk, thank you for this blog post and you are not alone. I had to gather my thoughts for a few days before commenting because after certain experiences I’ve had, I do believe evil exists and demonic possession is possible but I rarely talk about it. People are often hesitant to come forward and openly discuss this for fear of being misunderstood. I also think that some people who have never experienced anything similar are prone to thinking that it’s all fantasy, a product of an overactive imagination. Perhaps if I had never experienced it myself, I might think the same way.

When my siblings and I were young, my mother went into sudden rages (not because of anything we did as kids, it was spontaneous, we never knew when it was coming). Her eyes would turn black as night (her normal eye color was a lighter shade of brown) and she had a wild, angry look as she charged toward us screaming indecipherably. We all hid behind furniture shaking. I don’t need to go into the rest of what happened but as you can imagine, it was a nightmare of physical abuse. After coming out of those fits, she never remembered what she had done. Sounded similar to what you witnessed with your friend.

I considered demonic possession in my mother’s case. When I was 19, I asked the parish priest to perform exorcism on my mother. He refused and told me to go to church and say novenas (prayers). I left the church after that. My mother never changed, even after multiple hospitalizations, never recovered.

One incident stands out (and I’ve never written about this). When I was 8 years old, my sister Mary was 7 and my sister Rose was about 6, we woke up one night to hideous, bone-chilling laughter in the bedroom we shared. I will never forget what I saw that night. My sisters remember it too. In the corner of the room was a black shapeless spirit tall as the room, with blood red eyes and red mouth, laughing hideously. We cried out and my father came in first. He saw nothing and we were dumbstruck because he walked right through it and then fell over hard! It was as if this evil thing pushed him. He hurt his knee badly that night and he was never sure what happened. Then my mother came in and began very calmly talking to this dark spirit (I must note here that my mother was not known for being calm ever, she was high strung and prone to outbursts). She looked right at it and didn’t seem afraid. She calmly told it to leave her children alone and it left. It was chilling!

But that was not the last of the hideous dark spirit. A few years later after we had moved from that house to a different house in another city, my sister, Rose, and I saw it again. We saw it the day after there had been a house fire that destroyed our upstairs bedrooms (no one was hurt). Rose and I went upstairs to grab some of our belongings. In the corner of the bedroom where the fire had started (from a space heater), there it was, the dark spirit with the hideous red eyes and mouth, laughing. We both saw and heard it at the same time. Years had passed, we had moved and never spoke of the dark spirit again after that night when we were young, yet here it was again. Chilling! The following year, my mother had a severe nervous breakdown, was hospitalized for the first time, and that’s when we had to go to an orphanage, then various foster homes. I never saw the evil thing again but we never got to go home again either, except for occasional home visits allowed by social workers. However, whenever I walked into my mother’s bedroom for years afterwards, I felt a heaviness in the air, a cold chill, so I stayed away as much as possible.

Like you, there have been times when I’ve felt an overwhelming sense of doom entering a building. When that happens, I try to go another route if possible. I think those feelings may be intuitive warnings for those of us sensitive enough to feel it. RPD, you are not alone and thank you for sharing your experience.

    1. JerseyLil, when I wrote this post I too was almost reluctant to publish it because I thought that many people would not understand the point I was trying to make as can be the case when discussing about evil spirits, ghosts etc.. I was so glad I did publish it though, because it seems that many of us has had experiences of the same or similar thing at some point in our lives and it's real. And even those who don't believe or has never seen/heard anything, they didn't dismiss everyone has mad or crazy.

What a terrible experience you and your siblings had as children over a long period of time. The fear must have been awful especially not knowing when an attack would happen, and furthermore, it makes it worse because your mother had no knowledge of what she was doing to you all.
As for the priest, I'm wondering if there was a possibility that even if he believed in demon possession, he might not have had any idea or experience so he swept the matter under the carpet and told you to pray instead. Or maybe he just thought you were mad, so to speak Or maybe he was just plain scared. Either way, as a church leader I personally feel that he should have done much more with you and your family to try and safeguard you.

I'm just wondering if your mother had some connection with this evil spirit because of the behavior she exhibited when she came into the room that night. It also seemed to be around when she was around and when you eventually moved away from her you didn't encounter it again. In fact you still felt a presence in her bedroom when you returned for visits.

JerseyLil, thank you so much for allowing everyone who reads this to get incite into your personal life. I more than appreciate your openess about such a topic.

    2. Thank you RPD. Yes, I have wondered about my mother’s connection to that evil spirit. She communicated with it directly and it was only around when she was around. And yes, once I moved away, I no longer encountered it except when I went back home and into her room. Not something most people would understand. How and why that happened, how that evil spirit got into my mom at all, is something I’ve thought of over the years. I have some theories but too long to go into here. Suffice to say I think it has roots in Sicily and has been with that family for generations.

  37. I have experienced similar things. Not the demonic voice scenario, but there have been other things... I don't know that I can get into them here, it would take too long to explain it all, but I have been physically moved by an unseen presence, I have had the hair on the back of my neck stand up, I've been unable to breathe or move due to paralyzing fear knowing that "Something wicked this way comes". I understand your dilemma with trying to explain in words what you can't even completely get your brain around.

Do I think mental illness has a connection or correlation to demonic possession? No. I don't. I think they are completely separate conditions affecting different parts of our selves, the mind for one, the spirit or soul for the other. I think possession can look like mental illness but only because too many of us deny the spirit and others of us are afraid of that realm. As a Christian, I'm afraid many of my fellow brothers and sisters are too quick to put a spiritual label on a physiologic disorder. I don't know why. Well, yes I do. It's because society calls mental illness "personal weakness" and we just can't have that! That would mean my faith in God is weak!

Things are improving for folks with mental illness but we still have a long way to go and a lot to learn. But yes, without a doubt, they are separate issues or conditions. I could go on and on, but I won't. :)

    1. A warm welcome to you Traci, and thanks for reading and commenting.
A couple of things that I want to respond to. Firstly, when I speak of a similarity between mental illness and evil spirits, I am saying the same thing as you - they are separate things, but at the same time, difficult to distinguish in their manifestations.

I also agree with you that there is a HUGE and completely unjustified stigma attached to mental illness and sadly this attitude also prevails in the church, in many cases. It's something I have touched on in one of my previous posts:

      Depression - Real or Fake?

It was good to hear from you and hope you come back to read some more. Feel free to take the time to make comments as I don't like to restrict people when they are making a point (don't worry about length).

  38. This is a strange subject isn't it. I believe almost every person believes in "spirits" in one form or another. Yet, when you speak openly about such things, unless you speak in terms of religion (and even then sometimes), people think you are fruity, or making it up.

I believe all living things have something within them. Call it a soul, a spirit, an aura, an energy... It's all kind of the same to me. We also have the ability to sense that energy in us as well, it's in our instincts. As a "civilized" race we lose the need for our instincts and most people lose sight of them. Some people are more in tune with their instincts than others. The energy within people can be benign or malignant, I think it is the same energy, it just changes "polarity" with our life's experiences. I think when we die that energy carries on, and we can sense that to.

There have been a number of times for me when fear has overwhelmed me for no apparent reason. Once when I was about 16, I was making a long distance walk home. I was walking down the side of a rural highway. There was a thin tree row to either side of the road, and fields beyond that. My view around me was fairly wide open, it was night however. As I walked along a sense of fear overcame me. I had not seen anything strange, or heard anything out of the ordinary. But I had a sense that I was being watched or stalked by something. The fear grew stronger, the hair on the back of my neck stood up, I had an overwhelming sense to run. I even thought I could feel the direction that sense came from, but could see nothing. I did not run, I tried to remain calm, and ready... But I didn't dally either. After I had passed the area, the feeling passed with it.

I enjoyed reading this post and the many comments people left I always enjoy hearing others opinions and experiences with similar situations. Well done my friend... Until next time.

  39. I believe in spirits as got three in my house. My house is built on an old airfield that was used in the Battle of Britain. Sometimes when I'm watching TV,I see a man in a RAF uniform at the corner of my eye and then when I turn my head he disappears, I've also seen a tall man with fair hair and when I was going through a bad spell and used to cry myself to sleep, I could feel someone stroke my hair as if to comfort me!!! When I'm downstairs I can hear footsteps walking across rooms upstairs, and when I'm upstairs I can hear papers being shuffled downstairs, or the radio will be turned on or off.

None of this scares me.I sense a lot and I recently went into a patients house (I'm a nurse) and had the urge to turn round and get out. I didn't like being in there and I can't tell you why, I felt physically sick. I just did what I needed to do and got out, and when I mentioned it back at the office, a few of the girls felt the same way. Was there an evil spirit there? I don't know. 40. @JerseyLil:

This is one of the most amazing accounts I think I've ever read. Yet, because of this I can see why you have felt reticent about sharing it. I have to say, however, that everything I have read by you comes across as very sane and rational. You don't seem the type to just hype something up and it must take a lot of courage to open yourself up to people potentially taking your experiences the wrong way.

I agree with RPD that the spirit, demon or whatever it is seems to have been linked in some way with your mother.

As a believer that these beings are real, this makes me think - what is it that causes these events in the lives of some people and not others?

For example, was your mother in any way involved in witchcraft or those kinds of practices, that you can think of?

Obviously I'm prying into something very personal to you, so please feel free to ignore these comments and questions, but I'd be really interested to hear your perspective on this, as a person who has had first hand experience.

What do you think makes these beings gravitate towards some people/places etc. and not others?

  41. Hum, intersting. As you might expect, I do believe in evil spirits because the Bible declares that they exist. Jesus encountered them many times during His day. I also believe the evil spirits are at work in the earth realm today and that all the brightest minds in our world can solve some of our problems because some of them is spiritual in nature. That's why we need God's help.

Over the years, I have experienced some things in church settings that I can only attribute to evil spirits. On several occasions, these things happened when we did something deeply spiritual such as having the entire church fasting and praying for several days. On the other hand, I do agree that we must be careful to not attribute everything strange to demonic activity.

    1. Yes, I've read how Jesus cast out these evil spirits by simply commanding them to 'leave' etc, but yet again and from my own personal experience coming from a church background, there always seemed to be a huge struggle when people in the church tried to do the same thing if they thought that someone had an evil spirit.
This is something that I must find the time to research more, because it has always bothered me.

Thanks for your comment Frank, it's just so interesting how everyone seems to have encountered these evil spirits /presence at some point.

  44. When I moved into a house in North Carolina, it was a run down neighborhood, but the mortgage was cheap (amazingly cheap for the area) and I was dedicated to make it work. Soon after moving in, I just FELT things in the area at night. Soon I started to realize that none of the relationships in the surrounding houses worked. So many failed or failing marriages. Yelling and screaming could be heard from a few different houses.

A bit later, I ended up starting my first real serious relationship, which failed in a fury of yelling and screaming. The second serious relationship of my life turned out to be a 'witch.' Say what you want about people's religions, she could sense the stuff as well.

We ended up befriending a medium, and we told her nothing of what we felt, or the area's problems. She came in and described to us a story about a settlement, where there was a 'war' going on. Either with the Natives or another settlement, but the story she got was thus:

The Man of the house left to seek revenge, and his wife was left behind, vowing that he had better return. He never did, and the people they were at war with came while he was gone, and tortured her. Now she walks the land there seeking revenge by destroying the relationships of those that could be happy, because if she can't get it, then no one deserves it....

No matter what you believe, it was a funky little experience, and I know for a fact that anyone in that area had a dark cloud over them while they were there. I'm glad to be away from it all. Although I love the paranormal, and I love hunting ghosts and such, I would not wish that feeling of psychic vampirism on anyone, because it truly will drain your soul down.

  45. Yes I believe in spirits and feeling presences. Although I have never had a truly frightening experience like the ones you mentioned I had a lot of scary experiences at a child eg, seeing things, hearing things, hearing footsteps behind me, watching my bedroom door close on its own, once something ran into my room and hid behind the bed (when I went and checked nothing was there) etc.

I was a very sensitive child and picked up a lot of things. The thing is that when people tell you you are mad or imagining, that's just it - You wish you were, you really wish it was just something you ate, something scary you watched or just wild imagination, you desperately want to explain away this horrible thing you experienced but you just can't it niggles away at you and you just know it wasn't that simple. I don't think you are crazy, I would listen to your instinct when these things happen, I think it will serve you well :)

  47. Great Post Rum!
For me i encountered an event like that when i was a kid. I have an Aunt who would complain about dreaming about the same man having sex with her. She felt him touching her when she was by herself as well as with people around. This thing tormented her constantly! One time she decided to come to church with us and she became eerily cold she complained about a pain in her stomach so we left and went home.

A few weeks after my parents had a get-together where all the family came over the house to relax and have a good time. All was well until everyone left and only my mother, godmother and Aunt were left. Me and my brother were at the living room watching TV when all of the sudden i hear my mother and God Mother yelling! The yelling was coming from the bedroom so me and my brother ran towards the bedroom they were in and saw my aunt on the bed being held down by my mother and God mother.

We stood right behind my mother frozen in disbelief of what we were seeing! Her eyes were red and she was speaking in a mans voice! My mother and God mother was praying while they held her down and telling the Demon to leave her body. My Aunt jerked and twisted her body my mother noticed we were standing there and shouted for us to leave now. We were kids so we ran to the living room listening to them chant out whatever was in her.

It must have been like hours sitting there listening to them shouting at the demonic spirit to get out. Then it grew quiet all of a sudden i hear my mother call out for me and my brother to bring her a glass of water. I walked into the room with the glass of water and saw both my mother and god mother all disheveled and tired. My Aunt was just sitting there crying.

This happened while i was around 11 years old I'm 42 and that event is as clear as if it happened yesterday. To me that made me believe that Demons do exist in the world. Sometimes me and brother bring it up from time to time and he also remember it vividly.

The story that i found out about my Aunt was that my grandmother went to a Santero for a reading and took my Aunt with her. My Aunt was only 5 years old, mind you in Latino culture we are told that children are not allowed to enter those spaces where they do that because a child's spirit is clean and would attract spirits to them.

My Aunt went with my Grandmother and apparently picked up some demonic spirit with out knowing. Apparently the Santero may have been doing something more than just a reading. My Grandmother believed in that stuff!

Now like everything else in life there is a balance and at times some people tend to use Voodoo for evil those are the ones you have to watch out for! the rest of those people who practiced that were not that way. I should know we had a few family members including my Godmother who practiced it.

    Keep Rising Rum!

    Jose

    1. Thank you so much for taking all this time to write such a detailed account which held me spellbound as I read it. Unfortunately, I made the mistake of reading it late last night shortly before going to bed, not a good move!

What's interesting about this is the relationship between the spirit of Santero and the spirit of the church. There seems to be a clear conflict here, with the person being the battleground. I wonder how these tensions are reconciled in your family. I certainly won't be getting any readings of any kind any time soon. Accept getting my electric meter read, ha ha ha.

  48. I am bipolar and I have always seen spirits.. Last October I sensed something dark was with me.. I captured pictures of what I call the wolf man in my TV that was off at the time. In one of them his hand is coming out of the tv.. Just recently I got a new camera and was messing around trying for a good selfie. In looking at the pics all are blurry and the wolf man is standing behind me. Just recently I have developed night terrors I am more than uneasy

  49. So sorry I didn't respond sooner as I was abroad. Wow, what an experience to have had. I can imagine why you have night terrors and feel uneasy about it. Is there anything you can do about the night terrors? Have you sort any kind of help to help you deal with this, whether medical or spiritual? I'd be interested in knowing. Thank you so much for taking the time to read my post and reply.
